The gov't forces the safety system improvements forces them to reduce emissions and they force the higher mileages. All of these work against each other. Other countries' governments aid in the R & D of new products and don't have the regulations ours does. That gives them HUGE advantages. Also, many other industries are tied into the auto industry. As the car companies goes so goes the country. That statement isn't as far removed as you may think. Millions of jobs in this country rely on the auto business.
