District 1: Pierce, McShane challenge Boler
FAIRMONT — As Martin County Commissioner Gerald Boler seeks his third term, he faces two challengers. Boler, of Truman, was first elected to represent District 1 in 2000, and re-elected in 2004. The district covers the eastern portion of Martin County, including Truman, Granada, East Chain and the northeast portion of Fairmont The primary election for District 1 is Sept. 9. In 2004, Boler ran against one of the candidates he faces again this year — Steve W. Pierce of Granada. (Not to be confused with Steven E. Pierce, who already serves on the county board representing District 2.) “It was a close race, within about 100 votes,” Pierce recalls. “The problem was I didn’t have time to campaign, because I had a house fire. But this year, I’m able to campaign more, so I’m getting out to meet more people.” Because of tough financial times faced by citizens, cities and counties, Pierce believes additional taxes are not the answer.
